French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday (September 19) visited the bell towers and roof of Paris’ Notre-Dame, as they are set to reopen to public visits.

Visits of the monument and masses resumed after reopening ceremonies were held in December, but the towers had remained closed.

The new tour route includes new spaces for visitors, with views on the cathedral's framework, its bells and gargoyles, while also offering sights of major Paris monuments such as the Eiffel Tower.

On April 15, 2019, a major fire broke out in the Paris landmark. The flames ravaged the monument's roof structure and then spread, destroying the spire, the nave and transept roofs and their wooden frameworks.

More than 2,000 artisans were involved in the renovation worked that ensued.

Over the course of five years, the 860-year-old medieval building has been meticulously restored, with a new spire and rib vaulting, its flying buttresses and carved stone gargoyles returned to their past glory and white stone and gold decorations shining brightly once again.
