Heavy floods in New Delhi and nearby areas wreaked havoc on Friday (August 7), with waterlogged roads disrupting traffic and forcing schoolchildren and commuters to brave the extreme weather.

One New Delhi resident described the situation as "critical," saying in some areas near New Delhi the flooding was "deep enough to drown a man."

Heavy rain alerts were issued for New Delhi and nearby towns by the Indian weather office, with the extreme weather expected to ease up by next week.

Other parts of India have also been affected by this year's torrential rains. The weather brought intense floods in India's rugged northeastern state of Assam, killing nearly 90, while 15 died in the southern state of Kerala, where rains displaced thousands from their homes.
