Israeli police released video on Thursday (April 30) showing what eyewitnesses said was an attack by a Jewish man on a nun in Jerusalem that took place on Tuesday (April 28).

Footage showed a man following the nun, pushing her to the ground, briefly walking away and then returning to beat her as she lay on the ground, before bystanders intervened.

Reuters verified the location from the buildings, the trees and the pathway layout seen in the video, which matched archive imagery of the area. The date when the video was recorded was verified by an official statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which said that the attack occurred on April 28.

Attacks on Christian communities in East Jerusalem and Israel have been on the rise in recent years according to the Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue, which tracks such incidents.

Police said the suspect, a 36-year-old man, was later arrested.
