V046-FRANCIA CALOR EN ROLAND GARROS
: Fans braved scorching temperatures to watch their favourite players take the courts of Roland Garros in Paris on Friday (May 29), amid this week’s heatwave that has set record highs for the month of May in France.
Clearly struggling with heat of more than 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 degrees Fahrenheit), athletes participating in the tennis competition have been playing in intense conditions, with many using ice packs and water to cool down.
Top-seeded Jannik Sinner, for one, succumbed to the heat on Thursday (May 28), squandering two chances to serve for the match before Argentina's 56th-ranked Juan Manuel Cerundolo ended the Italian's 30-match win streak with a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 victory on Roland Garros' clay courts.
On Friday, fans showed up at the venue with water bottles, fans and cool bags, with many hoping to snag a seat in the shade.
“It’s very, very hot, so we brought water, fans, suncream and a cool bag, voila, to fight this heat,” Parisian fan Nathanelle Arnould said.
Temperatures could reach 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) in the French capital on Friday, weather service Meteo France forecast.
Some fans, though, were undeterred by the weather.
“This is the only opportunity we have to come to Roland Garros,” American tourist Ann La Porte said. “We don’t care about the weather, we’re just going to enjoy ourselves.”
