SHOWS: Final preparations for the funeral ceremonies for Iran's killed Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, were underway at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosalla mosque complex on Thursday (July 2).

Reuters filmed workers pressure-washing the ground and hanging banners bearing the image of Khamenei, who was killed in airstrikes in February.

Funeral processions for Khamenei will begin on Saturday (July 4) in Tehran and conclude on Thursday (July 9) with his burial in his hometown of Mashhad, with additional ceremonies planned in Qom and Iraq in-between these dates.

Khamenei was killed on the first day of Israeli and U.S. airstrikes against Iran on February 28. The 86-year-old cleric had been at the helm of the Islamic Republic for 36 years.

During his rule, Khamenei built Iran into a powerful anti-U.S. force, spreading its military sway across the Middle East through proxy forces such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, while using an iron fist to crush outbreaks of unrest ‌at ⁠home.

Iranians gathered on Tehran's streets on Thursday evening (July 2) ahead of the funeral for Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The funeral will begin in Tehran on Saturday (July 4) and conclude with his burial in his hometown, the northeastern holy city of Mashhad, on Thursday (July 9), Iranian state media reported.

The coffins of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family lay in state in Tehran on Friday (July 3), ahead of the funeral.

On Saturday (July 4), Khamenei's remains will be taken to a Tehran mosque for the first stop in a national funerary tour. The bodies of his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, as well as the wife of the new leader, who were all killed in the same strike, will be carried alongside.

Gholamali Haddadadel, father-in-law of Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, attended the farewell ceremony on Friday (July 3).

Khamenei's death, and the succession of his son Mojtaba as Iran's third supreme leader, in a conflict with its greatest foes, mark an epochal moment in the Islamic Republic's 47-year history. Mojtaba, dangerously wounded in the strike that killed his father, has not been seen in any new image since the war began.
