Heavy machinery clawed through Trishuli's mud on Friday (August 28) as rescuers searched for survivors of a flash flood that killed at least 469 people in Nepal.

Almost 1,000 more are missing — in Nepal and neighbouring Tibet — after a glacier collapsed on Wednesday (August 26) morning, sending a huge torrent of rock, ice, mud and debris through Himalayan mountain river systems.

The flood destroyed power stations, roads and bridges along the route linking Kathmandu with Lhasa, a path popular with trekkers and pilgrims. At least 540 of the missing are foreigners.
