Thousands of people will gather in New York City, Washington and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Friday (September 11) to mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in 2001.

In New York, victims’ relatives will gather at the National September 11 Memorial Plaza for the annual reading of the names of those killed in the September 11 attacks and the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

A moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m. EDT (1246 GMT), when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. A second will follow at 9:03 a.m., when United Airlines Flight 175 struck the south tower.

Further moments of silence will mark American Airlines Flight 77 striking the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m.; the collapse of the south tower at 9:59 a.m.; the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville at 10:03 a.m.; and the collapse of the north tower at 10:28 a.m.

For the first time, a seventh moment of silence will be observed after the reading of the names to honor those who have died from 9/11-related illnesses.

Nineteen al Qaeda militants hijacked four passenger planes and carried out the attacks. The United States responded by launching a war in Afghanistan that ousted the Taliban government, which had harbored al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The Taliban returned to power in August 2021 as U.S.-led forces withdrew after nearly 20 years of war.

U.S. forces killed bin Laden in May 2011 during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, ending a nearly decade-long hunt.
