Tel Aviv

STORY: Israeli police clashed with demonstrators in Tel Aviv on Thursday (August 7) during a protest calling for the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and an end to the war.

Footage showed police using water cannons to disperse crowds as protesters chanted slogans, lit flares, and held up banners bearing images of those still held hostage. The protest is part of ongoing public pressure on the Israeli government to secure the return of hostages and seek a resolution to the conflict.

The Gaza war began when Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages in an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Israeli figures. Israel's offensive has since killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.

According to Israeli officials, 50 hostages now remain in Gaza, of whom Israeli officials believe 20 are alive.
