President Donald Trump and his Republican Party wrapped up an unusual convention in Dallas on Thursday (September 10) hoping to strengthen their midterm election prospects, gambling that a high-profile show of party unity will energize supporters and help Republicans defy historical midterm losses.

One eye-opening proposal to voters from Trump included paying every U.S. adult a $5,000 "Trump dividend" if Republicans win the elections and retain their control of both houses of Congress.

Several convention attendees interviewed following Trump's speech showed support for the move.

Republican voter Eric Clapshaw said he'd like the money used to pay off the national debt, but said he'd welcome a payout if it isn't used for that.

Valeri Hall, a Republican from Lubbock, Texas, said Trump's discussion of stock market gains energized her. “He's exciting. He's dynamic. We’re excited about $5,000 because we’re making lots of money here.”

The proposal faces the same obstacle as Trump's previously floated $2,000 tariff rebate, which never won congressional approval: persuading lawmakers to support a measure that could cost more than $1 trillion.

Trump also promised that oil prices would drop "as soon as we win the war with Iran," which he predicted would end "right after Election Day," November 3.

The conflict has shown little sign of ending since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February, frustrating Trump's efforts to bring it to a close either through military pressure or diplomatic negotiation.
