The suspect in the feminicide of a 21-year-old Spanish student on September 12 in Morelos state was arrested, according to an X post of Mexico Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch on Thursday (September 17).

The day before (September 16), an arrest warrant had been issued against a suspect in the killing of Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte. Morelos state prosecutor Fernando Blumenkron said authorities were searching for Francisco Javier N. for allegedly killing Tacoronte in Cuautla on Saturday night (September 12).

Students have previously marched in Cuernavaca, the Morelos state capital, and in Cuautla, to protest feminicides at the Autonomous University of Morelos State (UAEM), where the victim had arrived less than a month ago on an exchange program.

"We deeply mourn the femicide of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a young Spanish citizen whose life was taken in Cuautla, Morelos. We extend our most sincere condolences and our full solidarity to her family and loved ones in the face of this painful and irreparable loss.

From the moment this femicide came to light, @Defensamx1, @SEMAR_mx, @FGRMexico, @SSPCMexico, and @GN_MEXICO_, together with @Fiscalia_Mor and @sspc_morelos, launched a coordinated investigation to identify, locate, and apprehend the perpetrator. As a result of this joint effort, the alleged perpetrator of this deplorable crime is now in custody.

For President @Claudiashein, preventing femicides is a priority for this administration. When we have been unable to prevent a woman from becoming a victim of this violence, it is our obligation to clarify the facts, apprehend those responsible, and combat impunity with the full force of the State."
