V006-EEUU TEMPORAL CALIFORNIA
Heavy storms swept through Southern California on Wednesday (December 24), bringing torrential rains that triggered widespread flash flooding and mudslides.
In San Bernardino, eyewitness videos showed cars wading on partially submerged roads. More videos from Thursday (December 25) showed cars trudging through muddy roads after the floodwaters receded.
Reuters was able to verify the location and date of the video from original file metadata from the source. The buildings, road layout and business signages matched file imagery of the area.
Downpours measuring an inch (2.54 cm) or more of rain an hour in some areas were spawned by the region's latest atmospheric storm, a vast airborne current of dense moisture siphoned from the Pacific and swept inland over the greater Los Angeles area.
The Christmas Eve storm was expected to persist into Friday, posing unsafe driving conditions during what would normally be a busy holiday travel period, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.
