The number of people injured in a magnitude 7 earthquake that struck the southwestern region of China's Tibet has risen to 65, the local government said in a social media post on Friday (October 23), while the death count remained unchanged at 16.

Footage aired by state broadcaster CCTV on Friday showed rescue workers, police, soldiers and medical teams carrying out search and rescue operations, setting up temporary shelters and distributing relief supplies in the affected areas.

The quake struck Baqen County in Tibet's Nagqu city a day earlier. More than 12,000 residents have been relocated, and 501 aftershocks recorded by midday on Friday, the strongest measuring magnitude 4.3.

Chinese authorities have raised the national earthquake emergency response to Level III and dispatched a working team to the disaster zone to support relief efforts.
