V005-MEXICO PROTESTAS CONTRA CORRUPCIÓN

21 de noviembre 2025 - 11:25

Ciudad de México, México

STORY: Demonstrators took to the streets of Mexico City on Thursday (November 20) to protest insecurity, rising violence, and corruption.

Protesters marched from the Angel of Independence monument through several streets toward the Zocalo square. However, they were unable to access the square due to celebrations marking the anniversary of the Revolution Day.

Riot police held back protesters a few blocks before the Zocalo Square.

The demonstration, organized primarily by Generation Z youth groups, drew citizens demanding justice for specific cases of violence, including the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo.

Participants waving Mexican flags voiced frustration over worsening security conditions and government corruption.

2. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) LAWYER, GUILLERMO VILLASENOR, SAYING:

“It’s been seven years of nothing but complaints, excuses, and pretexts, and they have not wanted to confront crime as they should. They haven’t even wanted to monopolize violence. Violence is something the State must monopolize. It cannot be that any cartel is stronger than the State and that we live intimidated and afraid that what happened to Mr. Carlos Manzo might happen to us. Rest in peace, and long live Michoacan, long live Uruapan, and long live Carlos Manzo.”

4. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) TEXTILE ENGINEER, GUILLERMO ESPINOSA BARRERA, SAYING:

“Unfortunately, in this country, every day someone says there will be no impunity, but things are easily forgotten. What do I expect from this march? That it is a very peaceful march like that day (REFERRING TO: Saturday, November 15 protest), where we divert and reach the Zocalo, where we hope not to see that group (REFERRING TO: Black block, a group of protesters wearing black clothes), right?”

9. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) CONTENT CREATOR, CAMILA AURORA, SAYING:

“On a much smaller scale, because I think this march exceeded 300 people, we see a replication of what happened on the 15th: 80% of people come with sexist slogans, with slogans from the PAN party, trying only to attack the Morena party but not the entire system. But it is important to note that 20% of people are angry about the shortage of medicines, extortion fees, and failures in security. It is also very important that these issues are being discussed.”
