Air Force Two transported the casket of conservative activist Charlie Kirk to Arizona on Thursday (September 11).

A freight lift lowered the casket to the tarmac as spectators, some waving flags, gathered behind barriers to pay their respects. Flags flew at half-staff, and a hearse later carried Kirk’s remains from the airport as mourners looked on in silence.

Kirk, 31, an author, podcast host and close ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot Wednesday (September 10) while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem. Authorities said a single bullet struck him in the neck as he answered a question during an outdoor event attended by roughly 3,000 people, sending the crowd scrambling for cover.

Investigators on Thursday released images of a person of interest and said they had recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the killing.

Officials have not publicly identified a motive. President Trump called the shooting a “heinous assassination” and said law enforcement is making “big progress.” Utah Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said the shooter appears to be of college age and “blended in well” on campus.
