A fire broke out on Thursday (August 6) in a popular market in Bolivia's most-populated city, Santa Cruz, with no fatalities reported.

The fire started at dawn in the Feria Barrio Lindo market, the main market in the economic hub of Santa Cruz, according to media reports, which added that no casualties had been reported.

The Bolivian prosecutor's office said it had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

The Volunteer Firefighters UUBR said 50 members were working to put out the flames.

"I have been a vendor for over 30 years. We learned of the fire at 5 in the morning and we came hoping to do something and save something, but it was too late. The fire had consumed everything, the streets were full of smoke — there was nothing we could do."
