A partial lunar eclipse was visible over Athens in the early hours of Friday (August 28), as August's full moon gradually darkened while sinking towards the western horizon.

The partial phase began at 0233 GMT, with Earth's shadow progressively covering the lunar surface. In Athens, about 84% of the moon was obscured at the best visible stage at around 0350 GMT, just minutes before the moonset.

The moon set in Athens at around 0355 GMT, according to the National Observatory of Athens, meaning viewers in the Greek capital could not see the eclipse reach its global maximum.

August's full moon is traditionally known as the Sturgeon moon, a name linked to the time of year when sturgeon in North America's Great Lakes were more easily caught, according to NASA.
