Children were among the victims of a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday (October 15), where a gunman opened fire before being shot dead, police said.

“We don't have numbers at this point. We do know children are among the victims,” Bend Police Department spokesperson Sheila Miller said. At least two people were taken to a hospital, but their conditions were unknown.

Police received reports of a shooter firing at a vehicle outside Silver Rail Elementary School and arrived within minutes. “We don't have confirmation yet who shot the suspect. It may have been a bystander,” Miller said.

Authorities evacuated the school's roughly 450 students and 40 staff members to a nearby church as officers searched the building room by room.

“We don't have numbers at this point. We do know children are among the victims. And, I can tell you they're between 400 and 450 children that go to Silverhill Elementary and about 40 plus staff. So, as you can imagine, the process of getting all of those people safely out of the building and down to journey church is a real challenge. But we're working on it. We asked people to be patient. We got to be really thorough and make sure each area of the building is cleared.”

The victims include children and at this point, we have, like I said, hundreds of law enforcement from every agency in central Oregon on scene, as well as Bend Fire and lots of other fire personnel, as well.”
