V004-EEUU DISCURSO MELANIA TRUMP SOBRE EPSTEIN

10 de abril 2026 - 11:04

Washington, EE.UU.

Melania Trump’s extraordinary address on Thursday (April 9), delivered under the presidential seal in the White House foyer, was unprecedented and broke sharply with modern tradition for first ladies, according to an analyst.

Kate Andersen Brower, author of books on the White House and a former political journalist, contrasted Melania Trump’s actions with those of previous first ladies, including Hillary Clinton, Jill Biden and Michelle Obama, who largely avoided responding publicly to controversy.

She said the severity and nature of the Epstein case appeared to have struck a personal nerve, prompting an unusually forceful response.

Brower said the timing of Melania Trump’s remarks raised questions about what prompted her to speak out now, suggesting the first lady may have felt compelled to draw a firm line if she believed developments were imminent, making it clear she wanted no association with Epstein.

Brower said there was no clear “tipping point", adding that the address appeared aimed at staking out Melania Trump’s position amid uncertainty rather than responding to any single new revelation.

"Melania's speech was entirely unprecedented. It was something we've never heard a first lady do before. I was most struck in how she separated herself from the president. Very clearly, she was talking about her relationship or nonexistent relationship with Epstein. She did not come out and say anything about the president's relationship with Epstein, which is entirely in keeping with Melania as a very, very independent first lady."

"Hillary Clinton during Whitewater (political controversy), she was defensive of both herself and her husband. Jill Biden never came out and said anything publicly defending, you know, herself. Michelle Obama never did it, anything like this, even though both of those women were attacked in different ways, but none of them were tied to such a publicly, just really, just tawdry and completely illegal and disgusting criminal case that involves young women. And I think that's why we see Melania being so personally upset by this."

10. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR OF 'THE RESIDENCE AND FIRST WOMEN', KATE ANDERSEN BROWER, SAYING:

"You know, it might have been a better look for her to apologize to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, might have been better to not make it about herself. But I think she doesn't know how to do that. It is always about herself, what she has been through, and I think consistently other first ladies have seen inherently that you have this tremendous platform, this tremendous opportunity as first lady and don't gripe about it. Like Michelle Obama, you know, there were racist criticisms online and just absurd things written and said about her and she didn't come out and complain about it at the time, even though she had every right to. And I think that Melania kind of doesn't care that that's not what you're supposed to do. She feels angry. And some people might say, this is nice. She's being very honest."

13. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR OF 'THE RESIDENCE AND FIRST WOMEN', KATE ANDERSEN BROWER, SAYING:

"Oh, yeah. She seems utterly livid. She seems like this has struck such a nerve with her, I think, because, you know, it involves young women. I think she doesn't want anything to do with it. I mean, she's somebody who's talked about children and young girls and limiting, you know, this whole idea of revenge porn, for instance, very much tied to this kind of sleazy behavior, illegal behavior. And I think that she sees it as smearing her name, which she said."

16. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR OF 'THE RESIDENCE AND FIRST WOMEN', KATE ANDERSEN BROWER, SAYING:

"And I think that she's done stuff like this before. I mean, in 2018, she came out and asked for the deputy national security adviser to be fired. And I think that feels like so long ago. But that was striking, too, that a first lady would publicly ask for an administration official to be let go. That does not happen. And so she feels like she's been painted into a corner. I think some people might look at this and say, this is good, that she's calling on Congress to do something and to kind of clear the air and get the facts out there. She also could call on her husband to do something too. If he has nothing to hide, why not? So I think it's kind of like a lot of things, Melania. It's confusing because these things seem at odds with each other. If you want there to be a public hearing in Congress, then does your husband want that? Because it seems like he doesn't."

19. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUTHOR OF 'THE RESIDENCE AND FIRST WOMEN', KATE ANDERSEN BROWER, SAYING:

"I mean, you could look at this and say, does she know something we don't know that's about to happen, and she wants to make it crystal clear that she has nothing to do with this. That would be logical. What was the tipping point? This is something that's been talked about for months and months and months. Why now? We don't have the answers to that? We don't know. I think she was kind of putting her stake in the ground saying, I have nothing to do with this."
