STORY: Tensions rose in Newark after a vehicle pursuit by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents ended in a multi‑car crash, including one vehicle carrying three children, according to local officials.

Mayor Ras Baraka criticized the pursuit, which happened on Wednesday (February 25), saying federal agents ignored local laws that prohibit vehicle chases, unless there is an imminent threat.

"ICE cannot come into our city and recklessly put innocent people in harm's way, while they try to apprehend their targets" Baraka said in a statement posted on Instagram.

Baraka added that Newark police were not involved in the investigation and only responded after the crash. Eywitness footage showed a suspect being handcuffed and transported to a hospital.
