Rescuers worked amid loose rocks, fallen trees and debris on Friday (August 15) after flash floods swept through Kishtwar district, Indian-administered Kashmir the previous day.

At least 46 people died and more than 200 were missing following sudden, heavy rain in Indian Kashmir, officials said on Thursday (August 14), the second such disaster in the Himalayas in a little over a week.

The incident occurred in Chasoti town of Kishtwar district, a stopover point on a popular pilgrimage route.

The flood washed away a community kitchen and a security post set up in the village, a pit stop along the pilgrimage route to the Machail Mata temple, said one of the officials, who declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media about the incident.

"Immediately after a loud sound, I saw flood water rushing in. Around 150-200 people were here at that time. I started running. When I looked back, I saw no one. I have no idea where all the people vanished. I pulled my car to this spot. I saw some bodies here…we have suffered huge losses. I saw people being washed away. They were raising their hands as they asked for help. But, what could I do? I was terrified."
