STORY: Salvage crews have successfully raised Mike Lynch’s sunken super yacht from the seafloor, on Saturday (June 21) nearly 10 months after it went down off the coast of Sicily, claiming the lives of the British tech tycoon, his teenage daughter, and five others.

Work resumed at first light on Saturday, using one of Europe’s most powerful maritime cranes to lift the 56-meter (184-foot) Bayesian from the seabed. Crews began pumping out seawater as the badly damaged vessel broke the surface.

The upper decks showed significant damage, and the blue hull was heavily encrusted with mud.

The Bayesian had been anchored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it was struck by a sudden storm last August. According to a preliminary British report released last month, the yacht was likely overturned by winds exceeding 117 km/h (73 mph), to which it was particularly vulnerable.

Among those who died in the sinking were Lynch, founder of the software company Autonomy, his daughter Hannah, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and chef Recaldo Thomas. Nine crew members and six guests were rescued.

Once lifted, it will be secured on a barge along with the unit, meaning it will be completely out of the water, and it will begin its journey toward the port of Termini Imerese. There, the vessel will be placed in a guarded area, at the disposal of the judicial authorities, who are closely monitoring all of these operations from aboard one of our vessels."
