Espirito Santo (Brasil)

STORY: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticised U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday (July 11) saying that Trump was misinformed, asserting that the United States does not have a trade deficit with Brazil.

Lula made the remarks during an event in Espirito Santo, challenging Trump's recent announcement of a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods starting August 1.

Lula emphasized Brazil's willingness to negotiate but warned of reciprocal actions if the tariffs were imposed.

The Brazilian leader also addressed Trump's criticisms about former President Jair Bolsonaro, currently facing charges in Brazil's Supreme Court.

In a letter to Lula, Trump linked the tariffs to Brazil's judiciary launching legal proceedings against Bolsonaro, who is on trial on charges of plotting a coup to stop Lula from taking office in 2023. Trump defended Bolsonaro, calling him "very honest."

Trump said on Friday he will speak to Lula at some point, after he threatened to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports.
