S605-MEXICO MANIFESTACION REFORMA EDUCATIVA
STORY: A large group of teachers marched in Mexico City on Friday (June 6), with some participants vandalizing a government building during the protest.
The demonstration was part of a national movement organized by two teachers unions.
Elvira Veleces Morales, an union leader, demanded the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law on pensions and what they call the Pena-AMLO education reform, expressing dissatisfaction with the recent salary increase announced by the Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The education reform, voted in 2019, prioritized graduates from specific institutions for teaching positions, removed diagnostic exams for job access and scholarships, decentralized school construction and maintenance responsibilities, and established a new commission to oversee continuous educational improvement.
