STORY: An opposition lawmaker threw eggs at Kosovo's acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti on Saturday (August 8) after he told parliament he needed more time to hold talks with other parties before proposing a candidate for speaker following the June snap election.

Lawmakers from Kurti's Vetevendosje party and police officers rushed to intervene as Alliance party MP Time Kadrijaj pulled eggs from her purse and threw them toward the prime minister while shouting, "Shame, shame."

The incident underscored the political deadlock that has gripped the small Balkan country for nearly two years.

Caretaker Prime Minister Kurti, whose party won the snap election in June, needs only a handful of votes from smaller minority parties to form a government. However, he lacks the two-thirds parliamentary majority required to elect a president.

"We do not yet have a political agreement. Therefore, in order to avoid new elections, I asked for additional time (to present the name of the Speaker of Parliament)," Kurti told lawmakers.

Kurti's Vetevendosje party, which holds 58 seats in the 120-member parliament, is negotiating with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), which has 18 seats, in an effort to secure a governing majority and elect a president with the support of ethnic minority parties.

The LDK has insisted on holding the presidency as part of any coalition agreement, but Kurti has so far rejected that demand.
