NATO's Military Committee Chair, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, on Saturday (September 19) said that the Greenland deal between the United States, Denmark and Greenland was "very welcome".

"It's an agreement, so it's very, very welcome," he told a press conference in Copenhagen.

"We have a lot of stuff going on there from the military point of view," he added. "So, military speaking, we are taking great care of that area."

The United States, Denmark and Greenland said late on Friday they had entered into an agreement for the U.S. to ‌develop a significant military presence on Greenland, while prohibiting U.S. adversaries from building their own bases on the island.

Key details of the agreement have not been made public, including the degree of U.S. military presence in the self-governing ⁠Danish territory and whether any formal power over foreign policy and resources would be ceded to Washington.

Denmark and Greenland expressed hope that a deal, which is expected to be signed during the U.N. General Assembly next week, would end months of uncertainty triggered by Trump's threats to seize control of Greenland.

"From NATO's point of view, of course, I match what Michael (Danish Chief of Defence Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard) has just said. I mean, it's an agreement, so it's very, very welcome. We are not going in deeper....but again, we have a lot of stuff going on there from the military point of view. We have the Arctic Sentry activity, which is a huge commitment for NATO... I mean, just consider NATO has three flanks to take care of. It's the north flank, the east flank, and also the south flank. So this is our 360 degrees. And the Arctic northern flank is part of our patrolling activity. So, military speaking, we are taking great care of that area."
