STORY: A video circulating on social media on Friday (May 15) showed a man said to be an Israeli settler repeatedly clubbing a guard dog owned by a Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank village of Atara near Ramallah.

The owner of the dog said that the dog was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment from the attack.

Reuters was able to confirm the location from a Reuters eyewitness who visited the site. The date was verified by the metadata on the original file. Reuters could not independently verify the identity of the man who was seen attacking the dog in the video.

Israeli media outlets said that the assailant was an Israeli settler, and was one of several settlers who attacked the village on Friday.

The Israeli police said that “following footage circulating online showing a suspect brutally abusing an animal in the village of Atara in the Samaria area, an investigation has been opened by the Judea and Samaria District Police."

They added that police are trying to identify the suspect and "fully pursue the investigation".

Around 700,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank, among some 2.7 million Palestinians.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are deemed illegal by the United Nations and much of the international community. Palestinians hope the West Bank will be part of a future state.
