S039-CHINA REANIMACIÓN CONDUCTOR TRAS ACCIDENTE
STORYLINE:
A group of passersby joined efforts to save a man who lost consciousness while waiting in his car at a red light in Jingjiang City, east China's Jiangsu Province, on Thursday.
Surveillance camera footage showed that the car of Mr. Hu, the rescued man, suddenly lurched forward and rear-ended the vehicle in front of him.
Upon feeling the collision, Wang Fang, the driver of the other car, got out to speak with Hu, but then realized he was unconscious.
"When I saw he was in a coma, I tried to open his door, but it was locked," Wang told reporters in a later interview.
As a nurse, Wang suspected the man might be suffering from a life-threatening heart attack, so she immediately called an ambulance and began shouting for help.
Passersby quickly joined the rescue. Yao Yonghong grabbed a concrete pole and wedged it against the rear wheel of Hu's car to keep it from moving further, while Li Xiaoming broke the window to turn off the engine.
And then, several rescuers took turns performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Hu.
"After five minutes of CPR, we saw his hand move slightly," Yao said.
"Yes, his hand moved, so I asked him how he was feeling, but there was no response. So we kept going until the ambulance arrived," Li said.
According to local authorities, Hu is now in stable condition and receiving follow-up treatment in the hospital.
He later expressed his deep gratitude to the strangers who saved him.
"I'm very thankful to these kind-hearted people in Jingjiang, who were willing to help rescue me in such a critical situation," he said.
