STORY: Proclaiming Berlin the "city of freedom", a parade float from Berlin took part in Hamburg's pride event on Saturday (August 1), one week after a deadly car attack on the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade in Berlin left one dead and dozens injured.

Pride participants cited the attack as one of the reason for their participation.

"Why it’s important for me to be here? Simply to show that we are louder, we are more beautiful, we are more colourful. It’s as simple as that. And we are a community. We stick together, no matter what happens," said participant Betty.

"The vibe is incredible—exuberant—and we are standing united. We’re celebrating and show that we are loud, that we are strong, and that we won’t let an event like the one in Berlin get us down," said participant Pascal.

The organisers of the events are expecting several hundreds of thousands to take part in the Christopher Street Day celebrations, making Hamburg one of the biggest pride events in Germany among others such as Cologne and Berlin.

Christopher Street Day commemorates the riots that broke out in New York in 1969 after police raided a gay bar -- an event seen as a turning point for the queer rights movement.

It has been celebrated in Germany since 1979.
