STORY: Crowds of people took to the streets of Sweden’s capital on Saturday (August 1) to take part in the annual Stockholm Pride parade amid tight security after last week’s deadly car attack on Berlin’s pride event.

Participants paraded through the streets in sunny weather behind floats, dancing to music as spectators lined the route and cheered them on.

“It's really important to show solidarity and show that we want to be louder than the hate we see,” festival director for Stockholm Pride, Mans Axelsson, said.

“We have a long working relationship with the city of Stockholm, with the police that have been started over a year ago to plan this, so we feel very safe and have a good security measure in place,” he said.

Police could be seen keeping an eye along the route of the parade, which is the culmination of Stockholm Pride Festival.

One participant in the parade said that she thought it was more important to attend the parade in Stockholm this year.

“It’s a terrible thing that happened in Berlin, and it's even more important now that we stand for what's right,” said Nina Nilsson.

One person was killed and more than 30 injured in Berlin on July 25 when a van was driven into a crowd by a suspect who was later shot dead by German police.
