8. (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) INTERIOR MINISTER IHOR KLYMENKO, SAYING:

"A man (the shooter) who was born in 1968. Most likely a pensioner. He lives nearby. He was walking down the street. He started walking from Demievskaya street. On his way, he shot four of our citizens, and he also shot a fifth person, who was being held hostage in that shop."

11. (SOUNDBITE) (Ukrainian) INTERIOR MINISTER IHOR KLYMENKO, SAYING:

"Police negotiators spoke with him for around 40 minutes. We tried to persuade him, realising that there was an injured person there. We offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding and so on. But he did not respond, so the order was given to eliminate him, especially after he killed one of the hostages."
