STORY: Several hundred pro-Palestinian demonstrators on Saturday (September 27) marched through the streets of the British city of Liverpool where the ruling Labour Party is due to hold its annual party conference on Sunday (September 28).

The protest was organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and other groups who have been holding regular weekend demonstrations calling for the end of Israel's war on Gaza.

Some women dressed as widows silently pushed prams with photographs of children and babies killed during the war. Others banged drums chanting their solidarity with Palestinians.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined a dozen countries at the start of the week that recognised the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in a landmark diplomatic shift nearly two years into the Gaza war that faces fierce resistance from Israel and its close ally the United States.

Israel has drawn global condemnation over its military conduct in Gaza, where more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to local health authorities. In recent weeks, Israel has begun a long-threatened ground assault on Gaza City with few prospects for a ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply denounced Western countries on Friday (September 26) for embracing Palestinian statehood, accusing them of sending the message that "murdering Jews pays off."
