STORY: Pro-Palestinian protesters marched through central London on Saturday (October 10) on the one-year anniversary of a US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, which envisaged eventual reconstruction of the territory but has seen little progress in moving beyond its initial phase.

A smaller group of pro-Israel protesters assembled close to the marching route with police keeping them separate from the marchers.

The ceasefire deal left Israel in control of some 53% of Gaza, since expanded by Israeli forces to nearly two-thirds. Hamas controls the remaining one-third, where the 2 million population mostly live in makeshift tents and bombed out buildings.

Britain and Israel announced on Thursday (October 8) that the nearly 200-year-old British diplomatic mission in Jerusalem would stay open at a smaller scale and with a new name, in a compromise after Israel ordered the consulate shut in a sanctions dispute.

Meanwhile, Britain's Green Party last Sunday (October 4) voted to class Zionism as a form of racism, drawing criticism from British Jews and from the Israeli government which said it now viewed the party as "a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism."
