Rescue workers on Saturday (January 10) continued searching through the rubble of a collapsed landfill in the central Philippines where dozens were missing and at least four people were killed.

The Binaliw landfill in the central city of Cebu collapsed on Thursday (January 8), with 110 workers on site at the time. Several structures and facilities inside the landfill were damaged during the collapse.

Armando Honor, whose sister-in-law was among the workers who were missing, was losing hope that rescuers would find more survivors.

"I hope that they are still alive, though I don’t think they are,” he said, as other relatives gathered at the site to witness the search and rescue operation.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said in a Facebook post on Saturday the death toll had risen to four and that 12 others had been sent to hospitals.

Thirty-six people were missing based on a Friday (January 9) tally. An update on the number of missing was not immediately available.

“What we heard was that my sister-in-law had initially exited the building after seeing some of the garbage falling, so she went out, but it seemed she forgot something so she went back inside and that’s when the landslide of garbage happened. She could no longer get out and she was left inside.”
