Several hundreds mostly young people protested in Brussels on Saturday (October 17), clashing with police in a continuation of unrest partly inspired by demonstrations in neighbouring France.

Demonstrators gathered in central Brussels, with many wearing masks and chanting antifascist slogans. Police used tear gas and water canon. Some protesters overturned a car, according to a Reuters witness.

A protest also took place in the eastern Belgian city of Liège, where earlier this month students protested over Belgium's French-language education system, citing rising education costs, overcrowded classrooms and difficulties accessing study materials.
