STORY: Video released on Friday (January 9) showed a mosque burning in Tehran during Iran’s most widespread protests in years.

The mosque exteriors and the road layout seen in the video matched file imagery of the area. The date when the video was recorded could not be independently verified. However, state media reported on Friday (January 9) that the mosque in the video had been burned.

The buildings and the road layout seen in the second video matched file and satellite imagery of the area. The date when the video was recorded could also not be verified independently.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned on Saturday (January 10) that safeguarding security was a "red line" and the military vowed to protect public property.

The statements came after U.S. President Donald Trump issued a new warning to Iran's leaders on Friday, and after Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday (January 10) declared: "The United States supports the brave people of Iran."

Protests have spread across much of Iran over the last two weeks, beginning in response to soaring inflation, but quickly turned political with protesters demanding an end to clerical rule.
