STORY: Giza in Egypt was preparing on Saturday (November 1) for the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) due to start in the evening and security was tightened on the roads leading to it.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was due to attend the ceremony along with dozens of country leaders and royalty and which local media said would be broadcast by 70 global television channels.

Work on the GEM started in 1992, when authorities allocated a 117-acre site near the Giza pyramids for what would become one of the largest museums in the world, the museum’s official website said.

The project, initially scheduled to open in 2012, faced years of delays due to cost overruns and political turmoil.

The museum said it will be the largest place dedicated to ancient Egyptian civilization, showcasing artefacts from prehistory through the Greek and Roman eras.
