STORY: A massive fire broke out at the cargo terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Saturday (October 18), prompting a suspension of all flights, news agency ANI reported.

Footage released by Bangladesh Fire Service & Civil Defence showed emergency services and authorities operating on site as the fire raged and a thick plume of smoke rose over the burning structure.

Thirty-six firefighting units were working to douse the flames, said Talha Bin Zasim, an officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell, as quoted by local newspaper The Daily Star.

"All our aircraft are confirmed safe. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops," the newspaper reported, citing a spokesperson for the airport.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
