Dozens of mourners were injured on Saturday (October 18), during a public viewing memorial for Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga in Kisumu, western Kenya, as crowds swelled, a Kenyan Red Cross official told Reuters.

A Reuters witness saw injured people receiving treatment at the scene in Kisumu, the political heartland of Odinga’s Luo tribe.

Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics who was once a political prisoner and ran unsuccessfully for president five times, died on Wednesday aged 80 in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

A public viewing of his body in Nairobi on Thursday (October 16) turned deadly when police opened fire to disperse crowds that breached a stadium gate. Three people were killed, according to police.

His body was flown from Nairobi to Kisumu on Saturday for a final public viewing. A planned road procession to his Bondo homestead was cancelled following the incident, and the body will now be flown directly to Bondo, according to local media.
