Mayon Volcano in the central Philippines showed renewed activity on Saturday (May 2) after a fast moving current of ash, rocks and gas swept down its slopes, prompting authorities to reiterate warnings for residents to stay away from high‑risk areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the hot mixture of ash, gas and volcanic debris, locally known as 'uson', travelled down the volcano’s south‑southwestern flank, reaching an estimated four kilometres.

Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, with continued lava effusion, minor explosions and lava flows advancing along several gullies, PHIVOLCS said.

Authorities warned the public to stay out of the six‑kilometre permanent danger zone, citing risks of further ash flows and ashfall.
