STORY: Hundreds of thousands of people, local police said, peacefully celebrated Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) pride parade on Saturday (July 25), crowding the streets of the German capital’s Mitte district where the music from passing floats could be heard several blocks away.

While many of the participants wore colourful costumes and others close to nothing, thousands lined the streets along the course of several kilometres (miles) under sunny skies and a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius (83 F).

This year’s pride parade kicked off at 12 noon (1000 GMT) and was expected to last for several hours, drawing to a close at Berlin’s landmark, the Brandenburg Gate.

Christopher Street Day commemorates the riots that broke out in New York in 1969 after police raided a gay bar -- an event seen as a turning point for the queer rights movement.

It has been celebrated in Germany since 1979.
