Caracas (Venezuela)

STORY: Supporters of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores marched in Caracas on Friday (January 16) to demand their release following their capture by U.S. forces on January 3.

The rally, called this time by Venezuela's farming sector, featured banners, flags and pictures of Maduro and Flores.

Marchers moved through central Caracas and gathered near the vice presidency.

Maduro allies have held daily marches calling for his release since his capture on January 3, which Venezuelan authorities say occurred during an attack that killed at least 100 people, including 47 Venezuelan military personnel.

Maduro is accused of overseeing a cocaine-trafficking network with international drug cartels and faces four criminal counts: narco-terrorism, cocaine importation conspiracy and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Maduro has long denied the allegations, saying they were a mask for imperialist designs on Venezuela's rich oil reserves.

"We are simply exercising democracy, we are demanding today that the North American empire, President Donald Trump, return our constitutionally elected president and our first lady of the state. Today, we are exercising democracy, a participatory exercise. We are asking these people, since they have no evidence to incriminate him, to return our president. Today, we are demanding, with full right to our democracy, to our social justice, that justice prevail, that the rule of law be above individuality. Here in Venezuela, together as brothers and sisters, those who voted against and those who voted in favour, build the peace that is what really matters for our nation."
