Veracruz, México

A community in Veracruz state, on the Gulf of Mexico, grappled on Thursday (October 22) with flooding left by a weather front that has brought heavy rains for days.

The community of Boca de Uxpanapa, in Minatitlán municipality, has suffered from the overflowing of the Uxpanapa River caused by weather front No. 2, which has affected Veracruz since October 17.

The community, with some 250 residents and only accessible by boat from Minatitlan, said it lacks basic supplies and that the flooding has caused a public health emergency, with sewage flowing into the river.

The Veracruz government said on October 20 it was working to preventively evacuate riverside residents due to the risk of the river swelling.

According to local media reports, the weather front has killed at least four people in Veracruz.

The federal government said that Veracruz registered between October 22 and October 23 up to 79.6 millimeters of rain, considered “intense to extraordinary,” along with strong winds and electric storms.

“Yes, it affects us a lot. The situation we’re going through right now practically affects us, because now there’s nothing left, nothing at all. (REPORTER ASKS: WHAT DO YOU NEED?) Well, we need mattresses, we need sheets, groceries, because there’s practically nothing, nothing at all. (REPORTER ASKS: WERE YOU LEFT WITHOUT COMMUNICATION?) Yes, truly. You can’t, like right now when the signal starts to go, well, you can’t anymore. You’re practically cut off, and with the river level rising, there’s nothing more that can be done.”

“It’s a little clear now, but when it comes with debris and swampy water, it runs really fast, you can’t. (REPORTER ASKING: IS THAT WHY YOU DECIDED TO SUSPEND CLASSES?) That’s why, with the teachers, we decided, at least I did. I won’t risk taking my little girl because her school is flooded, everything is flooded.”

“Everyone, everyone is affected. Black sewage is flowing from the pasture into the river. The water can’t be drunk or used to wash. We’re lacking water, food, mattresses and blankets, which is what my community needs most. Because of the bad weather, most people here make their living from fishing, and we haven’t been able to go out and fish.”

“Spots started coming out on me, and then they turned into burns. I went to see the doctor, and he said it’s an infection from the water. (REPORTER SAYS: BUT THERE’S NO DOCTOR HERE) No, we have to travel to Minatitlan. The most difficult thing here is that people have to go to a medical appointment, and the passenger boats, like the one we’re on right now for transport, charge 250 pesos (13 USD approx.) per person to pick them up and 250 to bring them back.”
