STORY: France sent 85 rescue troops to Venezuela on Friday (June 26) to help with search and rescue efforts after two powerful earthquakes struck near the capital Caracas, killing over 900 people.

The Venezuelan government said 920 people were dead, 3,360 injured and 172 still trapped after the quakes devastated parts of Caracas and surrounding areas on Wednesday (June 24) evening. More than 50,000 people were reported missing.

The tremors — a magnitude 7.2 followed less than a minute later by a magnitude 7.5 — hit about 160 km (100 miles) west of Caracas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which warned the toll would most likely run into the thousands, with a substantial probability of exceeding 10,000.
