S005-CUBA REUNION MANDOS MILITARES
STORY: Revolutionary Armed Forces Minister Army Corps General Alvaro Lopez Miera oversaw military exercises in the Mayabeque region, about 40 kilometers east of Havana, Cuban state television reported on Friday (May 29).
The drills focused on artillery handling, optical instruments, communications equipment and firing exercises, according to the state TV report.
The exercises come as Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal warned this week that the risk of U.S. military aggression against the island is growing amid stalled talks between the two nations.
Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. has effectively imposed a blockade on Cuba by threatening sanctions on countries supplying it with fuel, triggering power outages and exacerbating its worst crisis in decades.
In the latest escalation in Trump's pressure campaign against Cuba's Communist government, the U.S. formally charged former President Raul Castro with four counts of murder for the 1996 downing of civilian aircraft operated by Miami-based exiles.
