S005-COLOMBIA LIDERES CUMBRE AMAZONICA
Leaders of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) reaffirmed their commitment to protect the Amazon and combat climate change at a summit in Bogotá on Friday (August 22), according to a joint declaration. The presidents of Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, and the vice-president of Ecuador emphasized the urgency of unified action to prevent deforestation, protect indigenous peoples, and promote sustainable development in the region.
The summit, held ahead of the COP30 climate conference in Belem do Para, Brazil, focused on implementing the Belem Declaration, which includes 29 resolutions to address deforestation, illegal mining, and transnational crime. Colombian President Gustavo Petro underscored the need for global solidarity, stating that the world must choose between "chaos and war" or "saving life and prosperity."
The Amazon, often called the "lungs of the Earth," faces increasing threats from deforestation, illegal mining, and organized crime, which have accelerated biodiversity loss and climate change. The summit’s outcomes will be presented at COP30, where Amazon countries seek to secure global commitments to fund conservation and sustainable development.
