S004-VIDEO PASAJERO CRUCERO HANTAVIRUS

09 de mayo 2026 - 09:39

Tristán de Acuña (Santa Elena)

STORY: Video released on April 26 by a passenger of the MV Hondius showed the remote island of Tristan da Cunha, where new suspected cases of hantavirus was reported on Friday (May 8).

The video showed the cruise ship approaching the island and Kasem Ibn Hattuta, the passenger who uploaded the video touring Tristan da Cunha.

The exact date was not verified but Kasem has been recording his journey onboard Hondius for several days. The ship made a stop on Tristan da Cunha on April 13 to 15. The island’s topography matched archive and satellite imagery of Tristan da Cunha. The vessel’s identity was verified from its exterior features, which matched archive imagery and Reuters own cover.

Tristan da Cunha, home to only around 200 people, is halfway between South Africa and South America and the world's remotest inhabited island, more than 1,500 miles and a six-day boat ride from St Helena, its nearest inhabited neighbour.

Two new suspected cases of hantavirus were reported on Friday, one in Spain and the other on the island, as experts race to contain an outbreak that began on the luxury cruise ship.

The announcements in locations thousands of miles apart will fuel concern about a cluster of cases so far associated with three deaths - though the World Health Organization has repeatedly said the risk to the wider public is low and the virus does not transmit easily.
