STORY: Peru carried out the Second National Multi-Hazard Earthquake Drill of 2026 on Friday (August 14), with rescue teams deployed in Lima where officials staged an 8.8 quake.

President Keiko Fujimori led the exercise, which was organized by the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) and is part of the preparedness efforts of the National Disaster Risk Management System (SINAGERD).

The exercise took place in 18 regions across the country, simulating scenarios involving an earthquake, heavy rains, and tsunamis.

In addition to commemorating the 19th anniversary of the 2007 Pisco earthquake, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake that inflicted significant damage, the drill takes place after the recent and devastating earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia, which occurred in June and August, respectively.

"Not only in our country, in the Junin region, in Chongos Bajos, Chongos Altos, two provinces that have been affected (by quakes), Huancayo and Chupaca. But we have also seen the terrible images of the earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia. So my first recommendation is to always be ready. A tremor, an earthquake, never gives warning."
