3. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

"Before we begin on the plane, this is a brand new hangar. Because as you probably have learned, these planes are much bigger. The other plane was about 35 years old, and it was time. And the president of the United States, numerous of them, would land, and they'd be standing next to one of the new 747s, and, the biggest difference is the difference in size. It's like virtually double the size. And actually on a runway, it looks even more so. And I said to myself, you know, these countries and they have a lot of respect for us, a lot. And yet they have a plane that's much better and much newer. It's a little ridiculous out there. And we have our signal and we have our beautiful American flag, and we put the wave in it. As you know, we've always gone with this straight little noodle, and I never loved that. Now we have a wavy, beautiful flag. We're waving it proudly because our country is doing so well."

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

"Qatar, who was so nice and providing, you know, we were at a little bit of a logjam, we're waiting for the; I call them the normal 747s. And I asked the Emir (Qatar's Emir) if we could use the brand new 747 that he got, when we first heard it, about 800 hours, 800 hours for an airplane is essentially, I think, Troy, you could say that's a brand new plane. And I said, we'd like to use it for a little while. Because the planes are pretty old. Our planes are old. So a normal president wouldn't do this. A normal president wants to stay away from aircraft. We don't want to order any aircraft. So that everybody thinks, but our country has to be represented properly and includes with, we have the greatest military in the world. We have the greatest aircraft anywhere in the world. Military fighters and bombers and the B-2 bomber. You saw what that did. And, we should have a plane. And we're going to have, as you know, we ordered two for, a long time ago. They ordered, and they're coming in. And the hangar was built for the large plane. The other plane is such a difference in size, but, there will never be one like this. This is very unique. This is considered the world's most luxurious plane. When it was built, it was built at a level that will probably never be seen again. And if the press would like, I don't know if it's going to help me with stories. I don't think they'll be any different. But what we're going to do is we're going to take you for just a quick tour. The press is actually, oh, look at them, they're actually smiling. Are you smiling?"

7. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

"The workmanship of this plane is when you see it, you won't believe it actually. The quality of of, woods, the quality of the materials, the quality of the engines, these engines are the finest, they're the best in the world. Nothing like it. So it's really an honor. And I want to thank the Emir of Qatar. He's a fantastic guy. He went through a lot over the last few months. He's very brave."

STORY: President Donald Trump on Friday (June 19) got a look at his upgraded Boeing 747, a plane gifted by Qatar, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as the aircraft neared delivery to join the Air Force One fleet.

The jumbo aircraft, offered by Qatar as a gift to the president last year, was overhauled by defense contractor L3Harris Technologies and has been flight-tested and painted in a red, white, dark blue and gold livery that Trump chose.

The addition to Trump's fleet provides a more modern and luxurious plane that the president, his aides, security detail and the media will travel in. The upgrade's cost has not been disclosed and it was done so quickly that some experts fear it may not be as secure as the existing Air Force One aircraft.

The Air Force's fast-track effort skipped some planned modifications for the next-generation presidential jet in order to deliver an interim version sooner, but officials said it was up to presidential standards.

The U.S. government's acceptance of the luxury 747 from Qatar raised questions about whether it was an inappropriately expensive gift. Trump dismissed criticism of the arrangement, saying it would be "stupid" to turn down the offer.

Retrofitting the luxury plane required security upgrades, communications improvements to prevent eavesdropping, and missile defense capabilities, experts said. Democratic senators estimated the conversion could cost more than $1 billion and raised security risks.

The Qatari jet is serving as a bridge aircraft while Boeing works to deliver two purpose-built 747-8s under a $3.9 billion fixed-price contract signed in 2018. That program is four years behind schedule, with delivery not expected until mid-2028 — a delay that risks leaving Trump without a new plane before his term ends in January 2029. Costs on the Boeing program have ballooned to more than $5 billion, with the company posting $2.4 billion in charges against earnings from the project.

The new color scheme marks a departure from the white and two-tone blue design dating to President John F. Kennedy's administration. The Air Force revived elements of a red, white and blue palette that Trump had previously pushed for but which was scrapped in 2022 after the service determined darker colors could cause overheating.

The new red, white, dark blue and gold livery will also be applied to the VC-25B — the military designation for the Boeing 747-8 — and to four modified Boeing 757-200s used to transport the vice president, cabinet members and other senior officials.
