Two beams of light illuminated New York City's skyline on Friday (September 11), as the city marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Visible for miles across the city, the annual "Tribute in Light" has become one of the most recognizable symbols of New York's remembrance of the victims.

The two shafts of light are an annual presentation by the Municipal Art Society. They are positioned to echo the shape of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, and are on top of a parking lot close to the "Ground Zero" site.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked airliners struck the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon outside Washington and a field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.
