STORY: Pro-Ukraine protesters unfurled a giant Ukrainian flag in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday (August 15) as President Trump and Russia's Putin met face-to-face in a high-stakes summit that yielded no agreement to resolve or pause Moscow's war in Ukraine.

Ahead of the talks, Trump greeted the Russian leader on a red carpet on the tarmac at a U.S. Air Force base. The two shook hands warmly and touched each other on the arm before riding in Trump's limo to the summit site nearby.

Following the summit, Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity that he would hold off on imposing tariffs on China for buying Russian oil after making progress with Putin. He has targeted India, another major buyer of Russian crude, with an additional 25% tariff on U.S. imports.

Trump has also threatened sanctions on Moscow but has thus far not followed through, even after Putin ignored a Trump-imposed ceasefire deadline earlier this month.

In the Fox News interview, Trump also suggested a meeting would now be set up between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, which he might also attend. He gave no further details on who was organizing the meeting or when it might be.

Putin made no mention of meeting Zelenskiy when speaking to reporters earlier. He said he expected Ukraine and its European allies to accept the results of the U.S.-Russia negotiation constructively and not try to "disrupt the emerging progress."

He also repeated Moscow's long-held position that what Russia claims to be the "root causes" of the conflict must be eliminated to reach a long-term peace, a sign he remains resistant to a ceasefire.

There was no immediate reaction from Kyiv to the summit, the first meeting between Putin and a U.S. president since the war began.

"Well we followed the situation in Ukraine for... since it started. And it's very close to our heart. The slaughter that's gone on for the Ukrainians and even the Russians has been a horrible thing. And it's something that they were attacked, they did not want the war, and it's something we can't live with as Americans, at least this American anyway. So we support the Ukrainians, we empathize with their suffering, and we hope the little bit that we can do might make some difference somewhere, so that's it."

My dad was an immigrant, he came here in the 50s after World War II, so I'm here to support Ukraine's sovereignty and the right for them to have autonomy and basically a seat at this meeting. For their rights to be considered."

"Wholeheartedly, I want to support Ukraine because they're just good people, just trying to choose their destiny. And they've had, before the full scale invasion, they've had 20 years of this from Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union, having direct influence and manipulation of their elections, their own revolutions within Ukraine, to just the horror of war that's where we are at today. And they deserve better so we got to stand with them. The rest of the north needs to be united to stand behind Ukraine."

18. (SOUNDBITE) (English) 18-YEAR-OLD RECENT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE AND ANCHORAGE RESIDENT, ANNIKA RUFNER, SAYING:

"Yeah, it just feels really good. Sometimes, specially recently, everything feels like it's going downhill so fast and there's nothing you can do. And just being able to get out here with a lot of people from our community and just say this is not what we agree with, this is not what our country stands for, just feels really meaningful."
